In the Brinell hardness test, a pellet is forced into the metal surface at a certain pressure. Depending on the hardness of the material, the pellet may have different diameters.

Calculating hardness

After the test, a round indentation remains on the surface. A camera measures the borders of the indentation (vertically and horizontally). The Brinell hardness (HBW) is then calculated from the average value.
